<h2>Two sentences, one word</h2>
<p class="lede">Often you want to glue two short sentences together: a fact and its reason. The little word that does the gluing is a <span class="sg-term" data-term="konjunktion">conjunction</span>. The most useful one is <span class="o">weil</span> - because. And it comes with an important side effect. Are you ready?</p>

<h2>weil = because</h2>
<p>Start with two perfectly normal sentences:</p>

<p>Now join them with <span class="o">weil</span>. Watch what happens to the verb of the second sentence:</p>

<p><span class="o">bin</span> jumps to the very end. That is the whole trick. I call words like <span class="o">weil</span> "pushers", because they push the nearest verb to the end of their half of the <span class="sg-term" data-term="satz">sentence</span>. You have actually been saying <span class="o">weil</span> in your preaching for a good while now - you just may not have noticed the verb quietly sliding to the end. Its cousins <span class="o">wenn</span> and <span class="o">dass</span> follow the exact same rule.</p>

<p class="note">There is always a <span class="sg-term" data-term="komma">comma</span> right in front of the pusher. Comma in front, verb at the end - that is the rhythm.</p>

<h2>weil vs the verb position you already know</h2>
<p>Compare the same idea with and without the pusher. Notice how <span class="o">bin</span> travels to the end while ich and m&uuml;de stay lined up where they are:</p>

<p>When the <span class="o">weil</span>-half also carries a <span class="sg-term" data-term="hilfsverb">helper verb</span> or a <span class="sg-term" data-term="modalverb">modal verb</span>, two verbs end up at the end - the <span class="b">main verb</span> first, the <span class="o">helper</span> right behind it:</p>

<p>Please do <strong>not</strong> learn this list by heart. The course hands them to you one at a time. But here is the family that <span class="o">weil</span> belongs to:</p>

<p>They all play by the same rule: comma in front, verb kicked to the end. Learn the move once with <span class="o">weil</span> and the rest cost you almost nothing.</p>

<h2>One warning: weil vs denn</h2>
<p>There is a twin of <span class="o">weil</span> called <span class="o">denn</span>. It also means "because" - but it is <strong>not</strong> a pusher. After <span class="o">denn</span> the verb stays in position two, exactly like in a normal sentence:</p>

<h2>Weil ich dich liebe</h2>
<p>I made you a little song that hammers the <span class="o">weil</span>-pattern into your ear and, while it is at it, answers the universal question: <span class="tt o" data-en="Why is the banana bent? - the German go-to for a question with no real answer." title="Why is the banana bent?">Warum ist die Banane krumm?</span> It is the next item in this lesson - the <span class="o">Weil Song</span>.
